TRAUTMAN - Bertram F.

Bertram F. Trautman, a retired Amherst Detective and lifelong resident of Amherst, NY passed away on August 15, 2020 after a long illness.

Bert is survived by his sister, Norma Wilhelm (William) Hiene; his three children, Daniel (Louise) Trautman, Louise McAndrew, Charles (Melinda) Trautman; his grandchildren, Nathan, Nicholas, Carey, Kirby, Brittany, Brian, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Christa; his great-grandchildren, Mathieu, Gigi, Derek, Drew, Theo, Mara, Ben, Luna and Amelia; as well as, his longtime companion Carol Boyer.

He is predeceased by his wife Rosemary (nee Klemann) Trautman, sister Marion, and brother Richard.

Bert was born in the wee hours of June 21, 1933 to Bertha and Norman Trautman. He never finished high school, instead choosing to enlist in the Navy. He was stationed in Key West, FL, and as far away as French Morocco. While in the Navy and home on leave he was set up on a blind date and met Rosemary. Letters were exchanged, love blossomed, and soon after he retired from the Navy, he and Rosemary married on November 20, 1954. Soon Daniel was born in 1955, Louise in 1958 and Charles in 1959.

For the first few years of married life Bert worked as a laborer, but by 1961 he was hired as a patrolman for the Amherst Police Department. A year later he became a Detective and found his niche. He worked a total of 31 years as a Detective and retired in 1992.

In his off-time Bert loved to garden and he had huge garden filled with every kind of vegetable you could find. He also loved to do woodwork and has made some beautiful pieces of furniture that will be passed on for generations. Fishing and boating were another favorite pastime and over the years he had several boats each larger than the last.

But Bert will be remembered most for his quick wit and sense of humor. Something he passed onto his children. He loved to make you laugh, and he was good at it. He taught us to look at life on the bright side. He also loved his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren and loved to see them when they would visit. But he also loved a good beer, his favorite was Genny. So, in honor of his love of beer the family would like everyone to raise a beer (preferably, a free one) in his honor and toast to his past and his new journey.

Due to Covid-19 private services were held for the immediate family only. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Hospice Foundation of WNY in his name. The family wishes to also invite all family and friends to a celebration of his life next spring at a location to be determined.
