Obituary of Christine R. Duggleby

Christine R. Duggleby, PhD (nee Roden)

April 29, 1940 to July 20, 2019

Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, Mrs. Duggleby graduated cum laude, from Syracuse University with her B.S. in 1961 and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1970. She moved to Williamsville in 1969 to accept a position as an Associate Professor at University at Buffalo, where she worked until 2018 in the Department of Anthropology.  Her federally sponsored research was a continuation of her doctoral work on blood groups in Rhesus monkeys in the largest free ranging colony of that species in Cayo Santiago- off the northeast coast of Puerto Rico.

Mrs. Duggleby's dissertation research resulted in a series of publications that delimited the six blood groups, coauthored with her thesis advisor, William Stone and her Anthropology advisor, Charlotte Otten. Her later publications centered on genetic differentiation among lineages and the population genetics of the colony.

More recently, much of her time was devoted to teaching, especially her course in Human Genetics, but with seminars dealing with population genetics, molecular evolution and systematics of primates.

Mrs. Duggleby belonged to the American Association of Physical Anthropologist and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Her principle hobbies outside of her home and work were camping, backpacking and sailing. She spent alternate summers camping in a pop-up camper, backpacking and 4-wheeling in the Rocky Mountain west and the Desert southwest. Most memorable was her mule ride into the Grand Canyon and a stay in a cabin at a Phantom Ranch and a summer spent in Alaska.

She was an avid sailor on three boats, a 17' Siren pocket cruiser, a 25' Catalina and their last boat- a 31' Hunter, all sailed out of Wilson NY and the Tuscarora Yacht Club. She visited every port on the North shore of Lake Ontario, going into the Thousand Islands area. She was an avid racer as well with the Wilson Harbor Racing Association (WHYRA) until physical infirmities got in the way.

Mrs. Duggleby is survived by her beloved husband, William F. Duggleby, Ph.D. and her loving daughters Leslie and Tracy Duggleby. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Celebration Friday, August 9th from 5-7 PM at Beach-Tuyn Funeral Home, Inc., 5541 Main Street (at Cayuga Rd) Williamsville.
