Obituary of Betty Jean Murphy

Betty Jean Murphy (born Niederlander, October 15, 1922) died September 20th at Beechwood Homes in Getzville. A lifetime resident of the Town of Amherst, she was the daughter of Grace and Daniel Niederlander, sister of the late Molly Ramshaw, and widow of Glenn Murphy who died in 2004. With degrees from The College of William and Mary (Phi Beta Kappa) and Radcliffe College, she taught at the University of Buffalo, pursued a lifetime passion for watercolor painting and gardening, and volunteered for many years at the Albright Knox Art Gallery. Betty was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Williamsville for her entire life and a strong advocate for the Niederlander Carillon given by her family. She was the owner and proprietor of the Williamsville Water Mills in the 1970s and 80s, helping to preserve the important historic structure now a centerpiece of the Village. She was an active member of the Junior League of Buffalo, the Park Country Club, and the Country Club of Buffalo. Betty is survived by her sons Glenn and his wife Kathy, and Dan and his wife Beth; her grandchildren Ned, and his wife Puyao; Emma, and her fiancé Drew; Grace, and Molly; and by many wonderful friends and cousins. The family plans a memorial service later this year. In celebration of her life and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Episcopal Church, 20 Milton St, Williamsville NY 14221.
