After obtaining his bachelors degree he served in the Air Force from 1953 to 1957 as a weather observer, serving a tour in Korea. After his service he attended Syracuse University where he obtained his Master of Science and, after his marriage to Christine Roden 1961 and subsequent move to Madison, WI his Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Upon obtaining his doctorate he became an associate professor of genetics at the University of Cincinnati. His work at the University of Cincinnati also included time as a statistical collaborator in an environmental study of the Nevada nuclear test site.
In 1976 William left the University of Cincinnati to take an opportunity to do epidemiological research at the Roswell Institute. After his retirement he took the position of adjunct professor at both Niagara County Community College and Empire College while assisting his wife Christine in collating her research data . Over the course of his expansive career William co-authored or assisted in several epidemiological and genetic papers in The American Naturalist, American Journal of Epidemiology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Evolution; International Journal of Organic Medicine.
His love of the outdoors began with a period of service at the Manning Fire Observatory and continued with many summer camping and hiking expeditions with his wife Christine and daughters Leslie and Tracy throughout the Rockies, Adirondacks, and southwest. This love of the outdoors led to his avid participation in sailing and racing sailboats which he pursued with his wife through several of the Great Lakes and Virgin Islands. His pursuit of the outdoors also led to continued trips to the Rockies, Alaska, and New Zealand. Both William and Christine were members of the Tuscarora Yacht Club as well as the Wilson Harbor Racing Association until health issues precluded further racing and sailing activities. William was also an avid genealogist, exploring his own and close friend’s families.
