Dr. Richard L. Weiss was born in Youngstown, Ohio on March 19, 1929. He earned his B.S. degree at Ohio State University and moved to Denver, Colorado where he built a very successful company, Capitol Door Company. He obtained a pilot’s license and plane in order to maintain his dealerships across the entire western United States. He later used the money from Capitol Door to put himself through medical school at the University of Colorado. During this time in Denver, Dr. Weiss met and married his late wife, Gina R. Seastedt, and they had their first child, Jeffrey.

Dr. Weiss moved with his family to Buffalo, New York in order to begin his residency, first in general surgery, then in Orthopaedics. His other children, Tammy and Cindy, were born during this time. He practiced Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine for almost 40 years. During his medical career, Dr. Weiss was the head of Orthopaedics at Buffalo Children’s Hospital, a teaching hospital which was part of the medical school program at the University of Buffalo. He was an attending physician at Buffalo General Hospital, Meyer Memorial Hospital, Millard Fillmore Hospital and ECMC. He ran a scoliosis and Orthopaedic clinic in Batavia once a month, and was a fellow at UB Medical School. Further, Dr. Weiss was a medical consultant for the Boston Bruins, and the head physician for the Buffalo Bills for almost 30 years. Orthopaedic surgeons from other states and countries would come to Buffalo to observe Dr. Weiss’ techniques and learn from his vast experience. He maintained offices in both Buffalo and Orchard Park. Dr. Weiss retired in 1997 due to macular degeneration.

Dr. Weiss not only had a long and successful medical career in Buffalo, but was also well known as a philanthropist. In his retirement, Dr. Weiss supported and participated in Meals on Wheels.

Beyond his accomplishments, Dr. Weiss was a brilliant and thoughtful individual with a great sense of humor and wit. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.  His most exceptional quality was his ability to interact with everyone, whether they were friends, patients, colleagues or strangers, and all in the same manner, with the utmost respect and dignity, which endeared him to all.

Dr. Weiss retired to Florida, and most recently to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he passed away on August 16, 2020. His love, wisdom and humor will be greatly missed.
